The Child and The Hound

The child was barely three when the hound made an appearance in her bedroom and woke her from a deep sleep. It was a dank, foul smelling beast with dark hair matted to its gaunt frame that contrasted with the pattern of her Cinderella bedspread. Teeth dripping with a thick, heavy substance, the beast  emitted a low-throated growl, clearly threatening the child with its presence. Its eyes were red-rimmed, black coals of menacing death. She watched it slowly climb onto the bottom of her bed, its gaze focused on her face. Her throat constricted with fear as the beast crawled closer until the scent of its awful breath stung at her nostrils. Its gaze left her eyes, focused on her throat... She felt the constant dripping of its spittle on her chin as the beast lowered its gaze to the creamy white flesh surrounding her jugular... The child stiffened and choked on the breath of the beast. In the dark she listened to the nearly quiet breathing noises of Mommy and realized it was up to her to be rid of this dreadful horror. Speaking in a squeaky voice, she mimicked the words she'd listened to in Sunday School. Miss Green, her teacher, claimed that no devil was strong enough to overtake a child of Jesus. And so she prayed to Jesus to save her from the horror and within minutes the beast was gone. When she grew older and matured, she came to realize that she was a Sensitive, one able to see what others could not. And so she learned to deal with the many visions of the dead and undead who haunted her in the darkness.

More stories of the undead to follow.
